Our Work
Our environmental crisis requires us to ditch the way our dominant culture relates to the living world. This is why the Sacred Land Alliance is committed to land rematriation: returning land to the care and stewardship of Indigenous peoples with an emphasis on restoring relationships rooted in responsibility and kinship. These relationships are grounded in a worldview of land-as-relative. In contrast to “repatriation” which implies legal transfer of land ownership, rematriation highlights cultural renewal and the re-centering of Indigenous governance and lifeways tied to the land.
Our commitment to rematriation guides our work in these areas:
Defense of the Sacred Peaks
We collaborate with an inter-cultural coalition of organizations to defend the Sacred Peaks (the so-called San Francisco Peaks) from wastewater pollution and exploitation by commercialized recreation and development. Learn more…
Land Justice Fund
We are developing a land justice fund which will offer pathways to redistribute resources and wealth, accumulated (directly or indirectly) from privilege and power gained from colonization and genocidal policies, to Indigenous-led organizations for the purpose of land rematriation. Learn more…
Outreach & Education
In service to these priorities, we organize education and outreach opportunities. Many of these offerings are oriented toward our non-indigenous relatives to support them as they move toward right relationships with the land’s Indigenous caretakers and the living world.
